Treatment benefits communties.

For every £1 spent on drug treatment, at least £2.50 in crime and health costs can be saved.

Why drug and alcohol services benefits communities

Drug and alcohol misuse in Kent causes a wide range of problems for families and communities as well as the individuals who have drug or alcohol problems.

Kent Drug and Alcohol Action Team (KDAAT) aims to reduce this by ensuring effective and accessible treatment is available to all Kent residents.

To do this, we commissions a range of substance misuse services across the county to promote and support recovery of individuals and families. Treatment can acheive real benefits.

  • Individuals can get help to reduce their drug or alcohol use.
  • Families can be supported to cope with problems caused by drugs or alcohol.
  • Communities benefit from improved health and wellbeing, and reduced drug or alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour.

There are also benefits for society as a whole. Evidence suggests that for every £1 spent on drug treatment at least society saves  two-and-half times that in the crime and health costs of drug misuse. NICE estimates the costs generated by each injecting drug-user add up to £480,000 over their lifetimes. More information about drug treatment and the benefits is published by the National Treatment Agency.

How are treatment services organised and funded?

We are a commissioning body. Commissioning is a complex process that involves funding, evaluation and monitoring services and each local community's requirements.

Needs assessments for adult and young people are compiled each year (currently 2009/10) and inform future priorities set out in our business plans. The needs assessment identifies where dependencies are more prevalent and the type of issues in different areas of Kent.

To ensure that our acheivements can be assessed and measured business plans are submitted each year to the KDAAT Board, both for adult and young persons' services. These outline how we will meet strategic objectives for substance misuse services. Our performance is measured against the business plans.
